Jesse Harris started writing BORREGO in 2016. The inspiration for the film came from a true story from Jesse’s dad, an amateur botanist.
Lucy Hale read the script and came on board in 2018, eventually joining as an Executive Producer for the first time in her career to help get the project off the ground. Joining Lucy Hale in the cast were Nicholas Gonzalez, Leynar Gomez, Jorge A. Jimenez and Olivia Trujillo. Producers included Damiano Tucci, Tiziano Tucci, Nancy Cartwright, Monica Gil-Rodriguez, Greg Lauritano and Jesse Harris
Originally planned to film in the Spring of 2020 in the California desert, covid forced the independent film production to move to Spain. Principal Photography took place in Almeria and the Desert of Tabernas in Spain in October of 2020. Additional filming in Borrego Springs, CA took place in the spring of 2021.
